We Want you to Flash Your Smile Not Hide Your Smile
Since your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you, it’s important to have a smile you’re proud to show off. Dental crown lengthening is just one of the many cosmetic dental procedures offered at Burkburnett Family Dental to transform flawed smiles into stunning ones that are Hollywood worthy.
Dental Crown Lengthening
The main reason people have crown lengthening is to fix the problem known as a “gummy smile,” in which teeth are of normal size, but there is an excessive amount of gum tissue covering the teeth.
The crown is the part of the tooth that’s visible above the gum line. Crown lengthening may be performed for aesthetic reasons, or it may be necessary to reach areas of the teeth that are broken or decayed.
More About Crown Lengthening
There are a number of reasons you may be a candidate for dental crown lengthening:
- Strictly for aesthetic reasons
- To expose cavities below the gum line
- To expose fractured areas of a tooth
- To explore more tooth structure before a dental bridge is fitted

What to Expect with the Crown Lengthening Procedure
While not every crown lengthening procedure will be the same for every patient, the procedure is similar for most people. Dr. Clark will remove part of the gum to expose more of the tooth below by making tiny incisions around the tooth to remove excess gum tissue.
In many cases, minor reshaping of the bone beneath the gum is necessary to allow the gum tissue to stay in the new position permanently. Crown lengthening can be done on one tooth or multiple teeth. The time needed for this procedure varies due to the number of teeth being treated. Dr. Clark and his team will discuss options to keep you relaxed and comfortable during this procedure.
Benefits of Dental Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a highly effective treatment for:
- Saving a tooth: A tooth has been broken but still can be saved, excess gum tissue can be removed and a dental crown placed to save the tooth.
- Fixing a gummy smile will allow more (or less) of your beautiful to be seen when you smile and talk.
- Reducing the risk of tooth decay because too much gum tissue covering your teeth doesn’t allow for thorough brushing because the gums are covering too much of the teeth.
- Gum issues must be fixed in order to properly seal a dental crown, dental implant, or dental bridge. The gums have to be at a certain position to effectively support these restorative treatments.
- Tooth extraction may sometimes require removal of excess gum tissue

Advanced Technology Allows for Pain-Free Dental Crown Lengthening
The team at Burkburnett Family Dental pride themselves on offering a number of amenities and sedation dentistry options to keep our patients calm, comfortable, and relaxed during treatment.
For crown lengthening, we use a laser to sculpt gum tissue; this amazing technology eliminates the need for stitches and the need for return visits to have stitches removed. The laser heals as it treats, so there is never any bleeding, and many of our patients require no anesthesia with crown lengthening.
